In some coutries the history of
association within the geophysical sciences began already in the XIX century
but in Portugal the first ephemerous society in this area - Sociedade de
Meteorologia e Geofísica de Portugal - has appeared only in the
last thirties of the XX century disapearing some years after.
During the years the need for this kind
of association was felt but only in 1995 a group of meteorologists has
promoted the idea among professionals, scientists, teachers and students
and has prepared the constitution of the APMG - Associação
Portuguesa de Meteorologia e Geofísica that was founded by notarial
act of 25 November 1996 and began its activity after the election of the
bodies on 2 April 1997.
The APMG is an independent association
without profit purposes that has the following objectives:
- to make efforts to contribute
towards the prestige of research, education and application of meteorological,
geophysical and associated sciences and to cooperate with organizations
developing activities in these areas, establishing with them relationships
for mutual improvement;
- to colaborate with institutions involved
in the environemental protection and in the prevention against natural
disasters;
- to promote the ethic and deontologic
principles of scientific and professional activities in the domains of
meteorological and geophysical sciences;
- to issue a revue;
- to develop relationships with congener
entities organizing and attending scientific meetings;
- to foster union and companionship among
the associates.
The APMG, actually with one hundred
and half members the most of them teachers and reasearchers become
on 30 October 1998 a member of the FLISMET - Federacion Latinoamericana
e Iberica de Sociedades de Meteorologia and on 14 September 1999 a fouding
member of the EMS - European Meteorological
Society.
The most relevant events organized up to
now by the APMG were:
1 - The 1st Symposium on
Meteorology and Geophysics / 2nd Portuguese-Spanish Meeting on Meteorology
on November 1998
2 - The 2nd Portuguese-Spanish Assembly
on Geodesy and Geophysics jointly organised by the Portuguese Committee
for the International Unions on Astronomy, Geodesy and Geophysics and the
APMG on February 2000
3 - The 2nd Symposium on Meteorology
and Geophysics / 3rd Portuguese-Spanish Meeting on Meteorology on February
